Mother Tongue Instruction (per NEP 2020)
NEP 2020's recommendation that the medium of instruction in the foundational and preparatory stages (up to Class 5, preferably Class 8) should be the child's mother tongue, home language or local language — with English taught alongside as a strong second language.
What NEP 2020 actually says
NEP 2020 recommends — but does not mandate — that 'wherever possible, the medium of instruction until at least Grade 5, but preferably till Grade 8 and beyond, will be the home language / mother tongue / local language / regional language.' English remains a second language taught with equal rigour.
Why research supports this
A large body of education research shows that children learn foundational concepts (numbers, science ideas, reading comprehension) faster and more deeply in the language they already speak at home. Learning Math in a second language adds an extra translation layer that slows understanding in the most formative years.
How Indian schools are adapting
Most CBSE and private schools in Warangal continue with English medium for practical reasons but use mother tongue extensively in oral explanation, story-telling and classroom conversation — especially in pre-primary years. The three-language formula (mother tongue, English and one other Indian language) remains the framework most schools follow.
How Yajur handles language
Our Pre-KG and Sr KG teachers use Telugu and Hindi conversationally to build comprehension before introducing English literacy, in line with NEP 2020.
