NEP 2020 (National Education Policy)
India's most recent national policy for education, released in 2020, that introduces a 5+3+3+4 schooling structure, mother-tongue instruction in early years, foundational literacy and numeracy targets and competency-based assessment.
The 5+3+3+4 structure
- Foundational stage (ages 3-8): Pre-KG, Sr KG, Class 1 and 2 — play-based learning.
- Preparatory stage (ages 8-11): Classes 3 to 5 — activity-based learning.
- Middle stage (ages 11-14): Classes 6 to 8 — concept-based learning.
- Secondary stage (ages 14-18): Classes 9 to 12 — flexibility and depth.
What changes for parents?
Report cards in NEP-aligned schools focus less on rote marks and more on holistic progress: subjects, life skills and self-assessment. Early years emphasise mother-tongue or familiar language. Board exams remain but with reduced stakes and modular structure.
