Montessori vs Play School vs Pre-KG — What's the Difference?
Montessori, play school, nursery, Pre-KG — the early-years labels confuse most parents. Here is what each actually means and how to choose the right one for your child.

Walk down any street in Hanamkonda and you will see boards for 'Montessori', 'Play School', 'Nursery' and 'Pre-KG' — often on the same building. These words are used loosely, and the confusion costs parents real decisions. Here is what each actually means.
Montessori — a method, not an age
Montessori is a specific educational method developed by Dr Maria Montessori. Children work independently with specially designed hands-on materials, at their own pace, in mixed-age classrooms, guided (not instructed) by a trained Montessori teacher. True Montessori requires trained faculty and the authentic materials. Many schools use the word loosely — ask whether the teachers hold an actual Montessori qualification.
Play School — the earliest, play-led stage
A play school (or playgroup) is usually the very first out-of-home experience, often for children around 2 to 3 years. The focus is socialisation, motor skills and comfort away from parents — through play, songs, and short activities. There is no formal academic curriculum.
Pre-KG / Nursery — the structured foundation year
Pre-KG (also called Nursery in some schools) is a more structured foundation year, typically for children who have completed 3 years. It introduces early literacy through phonics, number sense, and gentle routine — still play-based, but with clear learning outcomes. It usually leads into Jr KG and Sr KG.
So which should you choose?
- Age 2-3, first time away from home → a good play school for social confidence.
- Age 3+, ready for gentle structure → Pre-KG/Nursery with a real early-years curriculum.
- Prefer independent, self-paced hands-on learning → an authentic Montessori setting with qualified teachers.
Early years at Yajur Public School
Yajur Public School runs Pre-KG, Jr KG and Sr KG on the Oxford International Curriculum's early-years framework — play-based, phonics-led, screen-free, with trained early-childhood teachers. For a deeper look at why this stage matters most, read why early years schooling matters.

Is Montessori better than regular Pre-KG?
Neither is universally better — they suit different children. Montessori favours independent, self-paced learning with trained teachers and specific materials; a good Pre-KG offers structured, phonics-led early learning. The quality of teaching matters more than the method's name.
At what age should my child start play school?
Most children start play school around 2 to 3 years, once they can separate from a parent reasonably calmly and manage basic routines.
Does Yajur Public School follow the Montessori method?
Yajur Public School's early years follow the Oxford International Curriculum foundation programme — play-based and phonics-led with trained early-childhood teachers, rather than the specific Montessori method.
