School Bag Weight Rules — CBSE and Government of India Guidelines
The official school-bag weight policy, why it matters, and how to apply it day-to-day.
Published 24 April 2026 by Yajur Editorial Team
The Government of India's School Bag Policy 2020 caps weight at roughly 10% of body weight, with absolute limits per class group: 1.6-2.2 kg (Class 1-2), up to 3 kg (Class 3-5), up to 4 kg (Class 6-7).
Three things every parent should do
- Weigh the bag once a month on a kitchen scale.
- Use a bag with padded straps and a chest strap — not a side-sling.
- Audit weekly: any book that's not on tomorrow's timetable comes out tonight.
