Spelling Bee
An inter-class or inter-school competition where students spell English words orally — building vocabulary, pronunciation and confidence on stage.
How a spelling bee works
A pronouncer reads out a word, the student repeats it, then spells it letter by letter. Children are allowed to ask for the meaning, language of origin, part of speech and a sentence — exactly as in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Rounds get harder; one mistake and the student is out.
What it builds
Beyond spelling itself, a spelling bee builds vocabulary, etymology awareness, careful listening, public speaking and graceful handling of failure on stage. Students often retain words for life because they associate them with the buzz of competition.
Major Indian spelling competitions
- MaRRS International Spelling Bee — large pan-India circuit, multiple age categories.
- WizSpell / SpellBee International / SpellD Bee — popular alternatives, often inter-school.
- ABLE Spelling Bee and various newspaper-led competitions.
