ISC (Indian School Certificate)
The Class 12 examination conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), the natural progression for students who completed ICSE in Class 10.
Structure of the ISC exam
Students choose four to seven subjects, with English compulsory. Each paper is split between externally-marked theory and internally-assessed projects/practicals, giving teachers some control over a portion of the final score. The exam is held annually in February-March.
ISC strengths
ISC is known for in-depth English literature, rigorous science syllabi (often considered tougher than CBSE in Physics and Chemistry) and strong project work. Students who complete ISC typically write and analyse very well — an advantage in interviews and university applications.
Acceptance and next steps
ISC marks are accepted by all Indian universities, JEE, NEET, CLAT and overseas universities. Many ISC schools combine British-style depth with Indian context, making it a popular choice for families seeking rigour without leaving the Indian board system.
