School Readiness Checklist for Pre-KG and Sr KG

Before you fill in an admission form, run your child through this simple readiness checklist. It will save everyone — including the child — a difficult first month.

Published 1 May 2026 by Yajur Admissions Office

School readiness is not academic readiness. A child who can recite the alphabet but cannot sit on a chair for 15 minutes is not ready for Pre-KG. A child who can use the toilet independently and ask for water when thirsty is ready, even if they cannot count to 10 yet.

The five readiness domains

  1. Self-help — can use the toilet independently, drink from a water bottle, eat a tiffin without help, put on shoes.
  2. Communication — can ask for help in any language, can say their name, can follow a 2-step instruction.
  3. Social-emotional — can separate from a caregiver for 2-3 hours, can play alongside other children, can wait their turn.
  4. Motor skills — can hold a crayon, can climb a small staircase, can throw and catch a soft ball.
  5. Curiosity — points at things, asks 'what' and 'why', shows interest in books and pictures.

Two-week home preparation plan

In the two weeks before Pre-KG starts, gently shift the home rhythm. Wake up at the school bus time. Have breakfast by 7:30 am. Practice opening and closing the tiffin box and water bottle the child will use. Walk past the school gate so the building feels familiar. These tiny rehearsals halve the first-week anxiety.

What schools observe during the 'interaction'

Most reputed Warangal schools, including Yajur, do not test Pre-KG children. We observe. We watch how a child enters the room, whether they make eye contact, whether they engage with a toy, whether they cope when the parent steps out. None of this is graded. It helps us understand your child so we can support them better from day one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the right age for Pre-KG in Telangana?

Most reputed schools admit Pre-KG at 3 years completed by 1 June of the academic year. Sr KG follows at 4+ and LKG at 4+ depending on the school's age policy.

What if my child is not toilet-trained yet?

Most schools expect basic toilet independence by Pre-KG. If your child is not there yet, give them another three to six months at home or in a relaxed playgroup setting.

Should I teach my child the alphabet before Pre-KG?

No need. Reading to your child every day is more valuable than drill-style alphabet practice. The school will introduce phonics in a structured, age-appropriate way.
