What is the Right Age for LKG in India?

Age cut-offs, developmental readiness and the most common mistake parents make — explained in plain English.

Most CBSE schools and Telangana state schools admit children to LKG at age 4+, calculated as 'completed 4 years on 1 June of the academic year.' Some schools accept 3.5+, some hold the line at 4.0+. The difference might sound small but it matters.

Why earlier isn't better

A child who joins LKG before age 4 is being asked to sit, follow group instructions, and use the toilet independently for 4-5 hours a day at an age where their nervous system isn't ready. The result is often anxiety, accidents and a reputation as the 'difficult child' that's hard to shake off.

What 'readiness' actually looks like

  • Can stay separated from a caregiver for 3 hours without distress.
  • Can follow a 2-step instruction ('pick up your bag and bring it here').
  • Can use the toilet independently and ask for help when needed.
  • Shows curiosity about other children and is willing to share.
  • Can name colours, count to 10, and recognise their name in print.
