NEP 2020 for Parents: What's Changing in Your Child's School

The 5+3+3+4 structure, mother-tongue instruction, holistic report cards — explained without jargon

The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) is the biggest shift in Indian schooling in 35 years. Most of the changes happen behind the scenes (teacher training, curriculum design) but a few directly affect your child's classroom experience.

The 5+3+3+4 structure

  • Foundational stage (ages 3-8): play-based learning across Pre-KG, Sr KG, Class 1 and 2.
  • Preparatory stage (ages 8-11): activity-based learning across Classes 3, 4 and 5.
  • Middle stage (ages 11-14): concept-based learning across Classes 6, 7 and 8.
  • Secondary stage (ages 14-18): subject flexibility and choice across Classes 9, 10, 11 and 12.

What changes for your child

  • Less rote, more application — fewer 'memorise and reproduce' tests, more projects.
  • Mother-tongue or familiar language in early years — improves comprehension dramatically.
  • Holistic report cards — your child's progress in life skills, sports and arts is reported alongside academics.
  • Reduced exam pressure — modular, on-demand exams replace some high-stakes board exams.
