The Right Way to Use Technology in Primary Education
Tablets, apps and smart boards are everywhere in school marketing. Here is what actually helps a primary child learn — and what is just noise.

Technology in school has become a marketing arms race. Bigger screens, fancier apps, '1:1 tablet programmes'. Strip away the marketing and one question remains: does this child learn more, faster and deeper than they would without the device? Often the honest answer is no.
Where technology genuinely helps
- Visualisation — videos of natural phenomena, 3D models, simulations.
- Adaptive practice — apps that adjust difficulty based on performance.
- Reading support — text-to-speech, highlighted phonics, dyslexia-friendly fonts.
- Creative tools — simple coding, music composition, photo and video projects.
- Real-time formative assessment — quick polls that reveal who needs help.
Where technology hurts
- Replacing handwriting in early years — handwriting builds neural pathways nothing else does.
- Replacing teacher relationships — a child needs adults, not just dashboards.
- Reading on backlit screens for long stretches — eye strain and reduced comprehension.
- Apps that gamify drill into addiction — points, streaks and badges substitute for understanding.
- Unrestricted access — even one wrong link can derail a class.
Age-appropriate guidelines
- Pre-KG to Class 1 — under 20 minutes of classroom screen per day, no personal device.
- Class 2 to Class 4 — under 40 minutes, shared school devices only.
- Class 5 to Class 7 — up to 60 minutes, supervised use of personal device for specific tasks.
- Homework involving devices should be optional or alternatives provided.

Every Yajur classroom has a smart panel and access to a shared device pool. But we operate firm screen-time limits, train teachers on digital pedagogy, and keep handwriting, reading from print books and pen-and-paper maths central to every grade. We treat technology as a tool, not a substitute.
Home tech and school tech work together
A child whose home life is screen-saturated cannot benefit much from any school's screen-time discipline. Conversely, a child with sensible home limits can handle technology in school well. The two environments need to align. Talk to the school about what they expect from home — most reasonable schools recommend under one hour of screen time at home for primary children, focused on creative or educational uses.
If your child uses a tablet for school assignments, set up a dedicated child profile, install a screen-time limit, and review usage weekly. These small steps prevent the slow drift from 'homework help' to 'three hours of videos'.
Coding and creative tech
Coding at primary level should be playful, not vocational. Block coding (Scratch, Code.org, ScratchJr), simple robotics kits and creative projects like stop-motion videos build computational thinking far better than 'learn Python at age 8' programmes. A good school treats coding as a creative subject like art, not as career training.
What teachers actually do with the tools
Walk into a primary classroom in any school that takes technology seriously and you will see something simple — the screen is on for short bursts, the children are mostly using paper, pencils, books and their hands, and the teacher is constantly moving and responding. The technology does what technology does well — shows a complex animation, runs a quick poll, plays a song, lets a child record an idea — and then it gets out of the way. The teacher remains central.
If you visit a classroom where children stare at screens for most of the period while the teacher checks her phone in the corner, you are looking at a failure of pedagogy, not a success of technology.
Children's eye health
Indian children have the world's fastest-rising rates of childhood myopia. School screen time contributes; so does phone time at home, lack of outdoor play and poor lighting in study areas. Ask the school about classroom lighting, recommended screen distance and breaks. Take your child for an eye test annually, even if no symptoms appear.
